Here,
Puerto Piramide is an ideal place to observe the magestic
southern right whales which swim this coast from June
through September, feeding on abundant plankton &
mating in the calm waters of the cove.
Punta Delgada is known for its distinctive lighthouse,
daunting cliffs & a large sea elephant colony. Punta
Norte is also known for the sea elephant colony &
here visitors often witness pods of Orca seeking an
easy meal off the unsuspecting juvenile calves as they
swim in the shallows. These Orcas or killer whales as
they are better known, will chase a youngster onto the
beach, partically stranding themselves in an effort
to snare a tasty morsal.
Punta
Tomba boasts one of the largest continental Magellan
penguin colonies with over 500 thousand individual birds
crowded here from September to mid- April. They build
nests under bushes, on rock outcrops, in fact anywhere
in caves or open spaces. Both male & female take
turns incubating the eggs of which usually 2 eggs are
fertilized & hatched.
Magellan penguins spend most of their lives at sea &
range 3000kms in a roundtrip journey between Rio de
Janeiro & the coastal breeding grounds of Provincia
Chubut, annually. In February, thousands upon thousands
of juvenile penguins, that seasons hatchlings, can be
seen moulting on the beaches surrounding the Valdes
Peninsula. They will start to run the gauntlet of predators
on their first sea bound journey by early March.
