There is a well defined
´Estancias Trail´ & those Estancias who are a part
of the ´Union de Estancias´ are required to deliver
a high standard of overnight accommodation in comfortable private
rooms, inclusive of a home cooked dinner on arrival & breakfast
the following morning. Each property adheres to a same demanding
standards not only of accommodation, but equally of hospitality
& camaraderie. When traveling in the summer (high season) it
is absolutely essential to have confirmed advance reservations for
each nights stay, as demand by far & away outstrips supply.
Roads across Patagonia are generally in good shape, but it is to
be noted that many are unpaved shingle carriage-ways that limit
& dictate driving at sensible speeds for the conditions. Safe
average speeds on these surfaces would not exceed 80 k/mph &
often slower, therefore one has to be mindful of driving times between
Estancias when trip planning is done. It is recommended that you
do not ´leave the defined road´ as to do so is to place
your vehicle at risk of becoming bogged down in a soft, wet or spongy
shoulders. In all other circumstances, off-roading is limited to
4 x 4 vehicles.
When your journey requires traveling through areas
of isolation, it is recommended that you carry food & sufficient
bottled water & sleeping bags, just in case you encounter a
situation that forces sleeping in the car. Fuel is available at
most all of the Estancias if required, but as service stations are
often far apart, always fill up at each opportunity with fuel &
oil & it is common sense to carry a large container of water
& insulation tape in case of a radiator problem en-route.
Lastly, always close gates as it keeps stock from
wandering & causing a traffic hazard. Climatically the weather
across Patagonia varies dependant upon the prevailing wind &
geographical location.
In summertime (December to end of February) Austral
Patagonia usually receives high sunshine hours with fresh dry air.
The mean average temperature is 20C, varying from 10C overnight
to 30C on days when blustery prevailing westerly winds hasten off
the Andes cordillera. It is suggested that travelers wear lightweight
long sleeve shirts & pants for trekking or horseback riding,
as the thorny bushes & high density of UV sunlight must be considered.
Light warm clothing to slip on in exposed regions or where altitude
is a factor should always be carried in a backpack. Near the glaciers,
a mountain jacket is a must as is an appropriate windproof windjammer,
25 factor sun-block, sunglasses & a hat with a chin strap. We
recommend that all visitors wear appropriate lightweight waterproof
trekking boots for walking as there are many streams & meadows
that are wet or muddied on outdoor cross country excursions.
In the shoulder seasons of spring (October &
November) & autumn ( March, April & early May), the changes
in the equinox make for considerable variations in climate, necessitating
travelers carry clothing for most all circumstances.
NOTE: Winter (June – September) is definitely
NOT a time to be venturing into Patagonia as a vacationer. Temperatures
plummet far into the sub-zero digits & most all roads become
snowbound, impassable to all but the most robust large 4 wheel drive
vehicles. Equally, emergency services are very difficult to source.
Patagonia is one of the last places on this planet
that remain unconquered, untamed & exquisitely virgin. It provokes
& heightens ones senses, breathes a fresh & invigorating
pulse into ones veins & definitely will revitalize the spirit
of adventure that lies within.
Sundance Spirit invites you to come & journey
through Patagonia along the defined ´Estancia´s Trail´-
as to do so will provide you untold riches & memories to treasure
for a lifetime.
