For those with a sense of history, the Recoleta
is home to a resplendent Catholic chapel, Basilica Del Pilar , however
it is most known for the sprawling cemetery & the hundreds upon
hundreds of crypts that are stark historical markers of the passing
of Presidents, Military Generals, heroes of the revolution, Aristocrats
& gentry of bygone eras.
The Recoleta also hosts the crypt of the Duarte family & ' Evita'
the world famous wife of President Juan Peron, who was & still
is idolized & celebrated by Argentinos, young & old.
Traditionally Buenos Aires is a city that begins to 'happen' late
in the evening. Restaurants are empty at 10pm & buzzing by 11.30pm
with many requiring reservations for late dining. For dining out,
Belgrano & Palermo, the Recoleta & most certainly Puerto Madero
all have some excellent cafes & restaurants ranging from the inexpensive
right up to the finest of dining.
Dance, Tango & Jazz clubs don't get underway usually until 1.00am
& stay open until 4.00am or latter depending on the area.
While Avenida Corrientes is considered to be one of the major
focus areas for entertainment, it would be worthwhile your checking
out Puerto Madero, the Recoleta & San Telmo districts which each
have their own flavour & speciality.
For shopping, the three main areas are the pedestrian mall along
Calle Florida & within the central city, Galeria Pacifico. Avenida
Santa Fe which runs for multiple city blocks also caters for all
tastes & the upper echelon of boutiques that are to be found in
Barrio Norte (Av Alvear) are not to be passed over.
With a mind to the arts , Teatro Colon is rated as one of the worlds'
finest Opera Houses & certainly to experience Opera here is an
exquisite & elite night out.
Museums, the many libraries & art galleries, all are easily accessible
being open to the public either free, or for a nominal entry charge.
The National Art Gallery is rated as housing some of the finest
of European works & equally, the National Library for as much
the elegance of the edificio, was founded in 1810 & steeped in
history.
Buenos Aires is laid out in a grid style of wide tree lined thoroughfares
& small one way streets. The city is dominated by Avenida 9 de
Julio & the towering ivory white Obelisco. Avenida 9 de Julio
is the widest boulevard in any world city & is so named to remember
the date that the Spaniards were repulsed & Independence was declared.
In addition, many plazas take their origins & names from historical
dates & the military legends, the exploits of whom secured Argentine
independence. Plaza de Mayo is surrounded by the financial district,
Catholic cathedral & the Presidential Palace & is connected
by Avenida 25 de Mayo to Plaza De Los Dos Congresos & the massive
Congress building. Plaza San Martin is the site of most Military
parades & takes its name from the General who, beginning in 1812,
vanquished the Spanish not only from Argentina, but with the assistance
of General O'Higgins across the Andes also from what is now Chile
& Peru.
So whether it is simply wonder lust or a sense of history, of culture,
the arts & entertainment, or perhaps even the romance of the Latin
pulse that brings you to Buenos Aires it is a city that will captivate
your heart, tantalize your senses & lure you back time & again.
