in fact Manso Glacier you will see the three main peaks
of Argentino (3410m), International (3554m) & Chileno
(3414m). After visiting Tronador, we head to Cascadas
Los Alerces, a beautiful waterfall close to Lago Hess.
Be ready to walk & to take lots of photographs as
this alpine eco-system & wonderous Andes mountains
make for compelling backdrop settings.
This day trip will have you back in San Carlos de Bariloche
by approx.
18.00 hs.
Day 3 - Bariloche - Rafting in
Rio Manso
(B) The Manso River runs through magnificent natural
landscapes & is ideal for entry level white water
rafting as it has long stretches of moderate flowing
waters as well as some sharp, yet relatively modest
rapids. This excursion we highly recommend it for guests
of all ages.
The day excursion begins in Bariloche after breakfast
from where we take route 258 south towards Lake Steffen,
our ultimate destination. During the drive we will pass
Lakes Gutierrez, Mascardi & Guillelmo. On reaching
the Pampa del Toro depression, we turn off 10 km away
from the main route & drive around Huala-hue Lagoon.
On arriving at Steffen's lakeshore the inflatable raft,
paddles & safety equipment will be prepared. Prior
to boarding the raft to begin this wonderful rafting
experience, each individual will be handed their personal
equipment including a life preserver that you will be
assisted to fit properly & the guides will provide
a safety demonstration to ensure all guests are familiar
with the techniques of this sport.
As soon as everyone is aboard raft, a practical application
demonstration will be given on paddling techniques,
then we will head out into the Manso River from Lake
Steffen.
The first stretch of the river is in calm, meandering
waters. During this serene part of the river, your guides
will undoubtedly share with everybody, their knowledge
of local species of plants & animals.
Photo of the spectacular surroundings offered in this
National Park are best taken on this initial stretch
of the river as latter on when the river gets swifter,
it may not be possible nor practical to have your camera
in hand, therefore you will need to assure that it remains
dry. We do recommend you have pre-purchased a suitable
protective waterproof camera bag ( available in most
outdoor equipment suppliers ) for this purpose.
A lunch stop will be made & a light but energy rich
meal, with delicious cold cuts & a variety of fruits
is available .
Once aboard & back on the water, the action begins!.
Team effort & spirit are vital ingredients needed
to navigate the rapids (Class II) that the Manso river
presents. Near the end of the afternoon, we arrive at
the old wood factory, where the raft will pull into
the bank & you can disembark, stretch your legs
& enjoy refreshm ents, tea/coffee & biscuits.
Day 4 - Bariloche - Horsebackriding
at Fortin Chacabuco
(B) Departing in the morning in our van, we take route
237 East & drive to Fortín Chacabuco Farm.
Thi historical place was the last military settlement
in the Desert Campaign of 1880 when the Government forces
were engaged in battle against the native Indians.
At the farm we will be greeted by the native guides
(baqueanos), who have the horses ready to ride up into
the arid & desolate Patagonian ´estepa´.
We first ride along the Fortín Mountain slopes
& likely can see Red Deer, Guanacos, Grey Fox &
perhaps the "King of Air Currents" - the Andean
Giant Condor who are often seen soaring on thermals
that eddy around the cathedral like peaks above.
Back to the ranch, a delicious barbecue (asado criollo)
awaits. This style of open fire cooking close to hot
coals but without flame touching the meats is typical
of Argentina. In the afternoon, time to walk around
the establishment, into the sheep-shearing sheds, the
horse stables & the ´gauchos´ quarters
where "mate" (Argentinos typical hot beverage)
is drunk.
As well another of the farm's typical activity will
be on display - rodeo - with prizes for lucky one´s
who manage to tumble & tie a calf. At the "matera",
you can sample Argentinos´ traditional beverage
( ´mate¨) fried cakes. Mate is made from dried
crushed leaves of the mate bush, then hot water is added
in much the same way the English make tea. It is served
in a ´mate´ cup & sipped through an ornate
( sometimes silver ) straw. Any time of the day in Argentina
is ´mate´ time.
