days - 3 nights
The Bolivian Amazon is said to contain
one of the singularly most intact ecosystems remaining
in the world & certainly, the most in all of South
America. This is truly a very special environment of
pristine wilderness, perfect for observing mammals,
insects, butterflies & especially birds of which there
are more than 1000 species inhabiting this 'selva' rainforest.
The Parque Nacional Madidi takes in a range of wildlife
habitats - wet marshy lowlands & dense tropical forest
to the Andes mountain top peaks. Accessible from La
Paz, this brief but in-depth itinerary takes you to
an area that is unique. Should you choose, an additional
night at Chalalan Ecolodge in the Madidi Parque Nacional,
is available on request at time of booking.
Day 1 La Paz - Rurrenabarque
Fly from La Paz to Rurrenabarque where you will be met
& transferred to your hotel. You have this afternoon
to become acquainted with this quaint & small town
set on the banks of the river.
Day 2 Rurrenabarque - Madidi Parque Nacional
(B, L, D) Departing after an early wake up & breakfast,
today we first travel up the Beni & Tuichi Rivers
by motorized canoe through the towering Bala Gorge &
on up to Chalalan Ecolodge. Here you will find accommodation
that is clean, comfortable & simple in style, nestled
on the shores of Lake Chalalan.
Late afternoon, depart for a sunset canoe expedition,
around the edges of the lake to look for mammals, reptiles
& birds coming in to roost for the evening. On your
return to the Ecolodge, dinner will be served.
Day 3 Madidi Parque Nacional
( B,L,D) Another relatively early awakening & after
breakfast commence the day with a guided walk through
the rainforest, in search of wildlife. The rainforest
likely will be still cool at this time of day & the
opportunities for observing different species of monkeys
& parrots - specifically brilliantly coloured macaws
- is ever present. You local guide will explain the
forest ecosystem & the ongoing interaction between
animals, insects, birds & the flora & fauna layers
that go to make up a rainforest.
Many plants that are specific to this area are used
by the native peoples as medicines & remedies for
everything from common colds & flu to exotic diseases
& like the amphibious inhabitants ( frogs ) while
some are enticingly coloured or scented, many are equally
poisonous.
The return to the Ecolodge this afternoon will be via
a lookout point called Mirador . From here magnificent
views of Lake Chalalan & the sprawling tree tops of
the Madidi Parque Nacional are to be had.
Day 4 Madidi Parque Nacional - La Paz
